Bio
Dr. John Sanderson is a board-certified physician with the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute specializing in sports medicine. He has a particular interest in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound as a tool for diagnosing musculoskeletal pathology. Dr. Sanderson is passionate about sports-related concussion treatment and research, and his expertise includes:
- Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Ultrasound-guided injections
- Fracture management
- Sports-related concussion management
- Treatment of arthritis, tendonitis, sprains, strains, overuse injuries and stress fractures
- Pediatric specific injuries
- Non-operative treatment for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions
- Platelet rich plasma and prolotherapy injections
Dr. Sanderson has worked with athletes across many sports. He takes time to listen to his patients, educate them about their conditions and develop individualized treatment plans.
Dr. Sanderson’s Training
As an undergraduate, Dr. Sanderson studied biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He earned his degree in osteopathic medicine from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia. He completed his residency in family medicine with AdventHealth in Orlando and performed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Orlando Health.
About Dr. Sanderson
Dr. Sanderson previously served as associate medical director for Grace Medical Home, a local organization that provides healthcare to low-income and uninsured individuals in Orange County, Florida. He loves cycling and has pedaled from Alaska to California to promote mental illness research. Dr. Sanderson has worked extensively in Central America and once lived aboard the Africa Mercy, a humanitarian surgical ship where he performed maintenance and repairs on medical equipment.
His experience also includes working with the PGA, LPGA, Special Olympics, Orlando City and Orlando Pride soccer clubs, Orlando Ballet, Washington Nationals baseball team, USA Boxing and college sports for the University of Central Florida and Rollins College.
Dr. Sanderson is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine with an added qualification in sports medicine. His professional memberships include the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
His research includes work on sports-related concussion treatment and recovery and traumatic brain injuries.
Outside of work, Dr. Sanderson enjoys coaching youth sports, hiking, golf, running, cycling and spending time with family. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
