Dr. Joshua Karas is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon with the Orlando Health Colon and Rectal Institute. He has cared for patients in Central Florida since 2015 and specializes in:

  • Advanced robotic and laparoscopic-assisted colon and rectal surgery for benign and malignant disease
  • Anal physiology testing for chronic constipation
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Treatment of anorectal disease
  • Functional disorders of the pelvis

He also has expertise in anal rectal ultrasound and sphincter saving techniques for rectal cancer in order to avoid a permanent stoma.

Dr. Karas believes in the importance of taking a proactive role in managing chronic disease by incorporating lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet and managing stress.

Dr. Karas’ Training

Dr. Karas received his medical training at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador in Quito. He completed his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He also completed a general surgery residency at Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, New York, where he took part in a clinical research training program and a postdoctoral clinical research fellowship.

He performed fellowships in minimally invasive/bariatric surgery through Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York, and in colon and rectal surgery through the ­Indiana University School of Medicine in Mooresville.

About Dr. Karas

Dr. Karas is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FCAS) and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

His research has been published over two dozen times in Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, a peer-reviewed journal that is considered the world's leading publication in colorectal surgery, and several other peer-reviewed journals. He has authored book chapters on the laparoscopic approach to rectal prolapse and troubleshooting difficult laparoscopic cases.

Dr. Karas is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Outside of work, Dr. Karas enjoys golf, soccer, running and mountain climbing. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
