Justin R Thompson, MD - Sports Medicine

Justin Thompson, MD, is a board-certified physician with Bayfront Health St. Petersburg Medical Group Sports Medicine. As a specialist in non-operative sports medicine, he treats athletes and patients with active lifestyles who experience injury and those wishing to improve their performance and health.

Sports Medicine for Injury and Prevention

Dr. Thompson has extensive sports medicine training in order to restore function to injured patients and help them return to health as quickly as possible. While he does treat professional and collegiate athletes, many of his patients are adults, teens and children involved in recreational and team sports. Others include those who exercise to stay fit or have a physically demanding job.

Preventing injury before it happens is a key area of Dr. Thompson’s practice. He advises patients about how to improve their overall health and performance and also prepare for playing or exercising by strengthening vulnerable areas to avoid injury or repeat injury.

For those who do experience injury, treatment procedures and therapy include:

Dr. Thompson’s Training

After graduating with honors from the University of South Florida, Dr. Thompson continued his education at the university’s Morsani College of Medicine. He completed his postdoctoral training at Bayfront Health with a residency in family medicine and fellowship in sports medicine. During his residency he served as chief resident.

Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in both family medicine and sports medicine. His professional memberships include the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, and National Strength and Conditioning Society.

He enjoys athletics himself and shares his clinical knowledge and love of sports as a member of the medical staff for sports teams at the youth, high school, collegiate and professional levels.
