Cervical cancer screening is one of the most successful cancer screening programs ever devised. Since the adoption of the Papanicolau (Pap) test in the 1960s, rates of cervical cancer in the United States have decreased by 75 percent. Currently, the American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 12,000 women in the U.S. were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2012.
