Adaptive Fitness
With a goal to positively impact the health and quality of life of those with SCI through access to wellness and fitness resources in the community, the program is a partnership between Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute and several local fitness organizations, made possible through a grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation.

What Is the Adaptive Fitness Program?
Made possible through a grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, the Adaptive Fitness Program is a partnership program between Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute and several local fitness organizations to provide a mix of virtual and in-person adaptive exercise opportunities for individuals in Central Florida living with spinal cord injury (SCI). Program offerings include:
- Adaptive CrossFit
- Strength training
- Yoga
- Weightlifting
- Weight loss
- Dance
- Injury prevention
- Nutrition education

How It Works
The Adaptive Fitness Program offers free, online adaptive fitness sessions and exercise challenges for individuals with SCI who are living at home. Participants can sign up for a virtual curriculum and fitness schedule and are provided with simple, at-home fitness items such as resistance bands/tubes and grips to use with the online videos. Participants also can choose in-person training at one of our local fitness partners that offer accessible locations and adaptive equipment. Participants may begin by doing the workouts at home and eventually transition to a local facility in the community as they feel more comfortable, where we also can continue to support their health and wellness needs.

The Benefits
The primary purpose of our Adaptive Fitness Program is to allow individuals with SCI who remain at home the opportunity to challenge themselves as well as improve their overall health and quality of life through access to a fitness and exercise program that meets their needs. We also hope participants gain a sense of community and empowerment by connecting with our local fitness partners that offer accessible locations and adaptive equipment for individuals to work out in person in a safe space.
