Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Quality Critical Care for All Children
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Orlando Health Children's Arnold Palmer Hospital provides intensive and acute care (for a severe injury or condition) to pediatric patients who are critically ill or recovering from surgery. Our Pediatric Critical Care team is dedicated to managing the unique needs of these patients using the most advanced technology in a family centered environment. We encourage interaction between our team and families, so parents and caregivers become active participants in their child’s recovery.
We provide care for a wide range of complex conditions. Some of the more common conditions we treat include:
Asthma and respiratory failure (severe breathing problems)
Complex neurologic disease including epilepsy and epilepsy surgery
Admission after major surgery
Drowning

Gastrointestinal disorders
Sepsis and severe infections
Trauma
Brain injury
Kidney failure
Nutritional failure
Poisonings
Our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
At the PICU, your family will find a state-of-the-art, family and child-centered facility with 17 private beds, each with accommodations for up to two parents or family members. Our multidisciplinary team is led by our Pediatric Critical Care attendings, who are specially trained in Pediatric Critical Care, and consists of fellows, residents, certified critical care nurses, advanced practice nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, clinical pharmacists, clinical technicians, dieticians, Child Life specialists, Patient and Family Counseling and chaplains.
The PICU also features a satellite pharmacy so medications can be obtained in a quicker fashion.
Pediatric Critical Care specialists are available within Orlando Health Children's Arnold Palmer Hospital at all times and provide care where needed, in addition to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Take a Step Down
Our Pediatric Special Care Unit (PSCU) provides care a “step-down” from our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This unit is designed for children whose illness is less critical or life-threatening and requires less intensive care.
