Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital Performs Next Generation Ablation Procedure Expanding Cardiac Care

Lake Mary, FL (June 12, 2025) – Orlando Health Lake Mary Hospital’s cardiac care team recently performed its first catheter ablation procedure. The procedure is a significant milestone for Orlando Health, expanding the hospital system’s cardiac capabilities in the region and bringing care closer to where patients live. Orlando Health Lake Mary hospital is the first community hospital within the Orlando Health system to perform the procedure.

Care teams have also started using a technology called Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA.) for ablation to treat atrial fibrillation (Afib), one of the most common arrhythmias. Unlike traditional methods, PFA delivers ultra-precise, short-duration electrical pulses to selectively target the heart cells responsible for the irregular rhythm. This advanced technique enhances safety by minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue, making it safer for patients.

The program at Orlando Health has been in the works for over a year under the guidance of Mohamed Elshazly, MD a board-certified cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiology physician with the Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute.

“At Orlando Health we are always looking for safer and more effective treatment options when it comes to treating our cardiac patients,” said Dr. Elshazly. “This high-tech procedure is just another example of our commitment to expand our cardiac capabilities in Central Florida.”

It is estimated that atrial fibrillation will affect more than 12 million people in the United States by 2030, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation is underutilized and it is estimated that less than 5% of eligible patients have access to this treatment. The prevalence of AFib increases with age and is more common in women.
