Proper Masking
Wearing a mask correctly is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Masks are recommended for anyone over the age of 2 who doesn’t have an underlying health problem that prevents wearing them. Face coverings should be worn in public when social distancing isn’t possible, like on the bus, in the classroom and around school. But did you know there’s a proper way to wear a mask? Wearing a face covering correctly can lower your family’s risk of infection by preventing the virus from spreading through respiratory droplets.
How to Minimize Masking Stress
Wearing a mask can be stressful for children. Here are three ways to minimize anxiety and encourage kids to wear one properly.
- Explain why wearing a mask is important. Use terms and information that are age-appropriate to help them understand it is one of the best ways to protect themselves, their classmates, their teachers and their family from COVID-19.
- Practice proper masking with your child. Show them the correct way to put on and take off their mask. Then have them repeat the process.
- Ensure your child’s mask is comfortable and fits well. Make sure it does not interfere with their vision or fits too tight, which can cause harm to the ears or the bridge of the nose.
- Allow your child to choose a mask with a fun print. Kids are more likely to wear a mask if it fits their style and personality, such as one that has their favorite cartoon character, sports team or color on it.
