Orlando, FL (Aug. 13, 2024) – Today, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is the first hospital in the world to use a new, groundbreaking blood test to help assess patients with suspected mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), or concussions. The rapid TBI blood test provides results in just 15 minutes and was developed by Abbott, in collaboration with the Department of Defense, and built upon innovative research that Orlando Health’s Dr. Linda Papa and others helped pioneer over 20 years ago.

Study Finds Clues In Your Blood Could Help Assess Traumatic Brain Injuries Within Minutes Of Impact
Orlando, FL (Sept. 4, 2024) – Groundbreaking research published on Wednesday shows that clues in your blood could help assess traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) within 30 minutes of impact, much sooner than previously known. The first-of-its-kind study, published in JAMA Network Open, marks a significant milestone that could inform how TBIs are treated in multiple areas including on the sidelines of sporting events, in military settings and in the field when ambulance crews respond to a patient before transporting them to a hospital. The study builds on decades of research by Dr. Linda Papa, lead author of the study and Director of Academic Clinical Research at Orlando Health.

Arnold Palmer Hospital Expands Pediatric Acute Care Transport Team
The expansion of Arnold Palmer Hospital’s acute care transport team will bring these highly-specialized services to referring hospitals in 18 counties in and around Central Florida. It is estimated the expansion will allow Arnold Palmer Hospital to transport 100 children with serious illnesses or injuries per month. The team will be in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Study evaluates college football players’ positions for risk of concussions
Orlando, Fla. (September 22, 2022) — A new research study looks inside the brains of college football athletes to measure levels of traumatic brain injury (TBI) biomarkers by player position. This study, conducted in collaboration with researchers at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) and Penn State University, and published in the Journal of Neurotrauma, sheds light on which positions are at the greatest risk for elevations in brain injury biomarkers. The biomarkers are proteins and other substances released from the brain after it has been damaged.
