Helicopter Transport
Intensive-level care that continues in the air
The Orlando Health Air Care Team is essential for patients with life-threatening injuries or injuries requiring immediate critical care and rapid transport.
Each helicopter carries a pilot and a highly trained medical team, including a critical care transport nurse and critical care transport paramedic. Coordinated by our communications center, we respond to the scene and work with the local emergency service personnel to stabilize the patient for air transport to the trauma center.
From arrival on scene through transport to the awaiting level I trauma team at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center or Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital, the Air Care Team’s advanced and immediate care can make an extraordinary difference in the survival and recovery of each patient.
Our care begins on the scene and continues throughout flight as we communicate with the receiving hospital team to keep them updated with evolving patient information as we deliver in-flight care. We work to prepare the trauma team with information that will expedite care. Upon arrival at the hospital, we follow well-established protocols to ensure a smooth transfer of care to the trauma center.
Each day we work to make a positive impact for each incident:
- The Air Care Team transports approximately 2500 patients annually throughout the greater Central Florida region.
- We serve a balanced mix of flights between interfacility (hospital to hospital) flights and scene calls, with each of the five bases flying about two missions per day.
- Orlando Health Air Care operates four EC-135 helicopters and one H-145 helicopter. They are stationed at Kissimmee Gateway Airport, Leesburg International Airport, Bartow Executive Airport, in Apopka at a free-standing location and at Orlando Health Emergency Room - Reunion Village.
