Pediatric Headache Clinic

Delivering Care with Compassion

Patient & Family Counseling

It is normal for a child to have a headache occasionally. But if the headaches happen often or cause a lot of pain, they can interfere with your child's quality of life. We understand how hard it is to see your child in pain and our experts are here to help.

At Orlando Health Children's Neuroscience Institute Headache Clinic, supported by the Leon Pediatric Neuroscience Fund, we offer comprehensive and compassionate treatments for your child's headaches and migraines. We work with your family to learn the cause of your child's headaches or migraines and find the best possible way to manage them so your child can live a happy, active life.

Multidisciplinary Care

Our multidisciplinary team includes a child neurologist, a psychologist, and a physical therapist. By working together and collaborating, our team can better understand your child’s condition and needs.

We know it can be inconvenient to make multiple appointments for your child, so we streamline the care process. Your child can see all three specialists in one visit at the Headache Clinic.

Conditions We Treat

Our specialists have experience in treating a variety of headaches and migraines. We can identify what is causing your child's pain and help them feel better.

We treat:

  • Cervicogenic headaches (pain starts in the neck)
  • Chronic migraines
  • Migraines with and without auras (visual disturbances)
  • Post-traumatic headaches (happen after an injury)
  • Persistent headaches
  • Pseudotumor cerebri syndrome or idiopathic intracranial hypertension (increased pressure around the brain)
  • Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (fluid pressure in the skull is lower than normal)
  • Tension headaches

Headache and Migraine Causes

There are many reasons why a child may have headaches or migraines. We work with your family to figure out what may be triggering your child's pain. Then, we come up with a plan to get rid of the pain and prevent it from coming back.

Common causes of headaches and migraines include:

  • Allergies
  • Diet triggers
  • Eye strain and other eye problems
  • Injury to the head
  • Hormone changes
  • Medications
  • Sleep problems
  • Stress

Approach to Care

Our approach to treatment focuses on all aspects of your child, including the body, mind and spirit. Your child's comfort is our priority throughout the diagnosis and treatment process.

The diagnosis process begins with our multidisciplinary team collecting a thorough medical history and doing comprehensive neurological and physical exams. We may also order imaging and lab tests. We help you understand and prepare for each test, so they are easier to manage for your child.

After diagnosis, our team creates an individual treatment plan for your child. We use a comprehensive and holistic approach to manage your child's headaches or migraines.

Your child's treatment may include:

  • Advanced medications to relieve pain
  • Behavioral strategies such as behavioral cognitive therapy
  • Identifying and removing triggers for headaches and migraines
  • Lifestyle and diet changes
  • Relaxation techniques
