Freestanding Emergency Rooms (ER)
As Central Florida continues to grow at unprecedented rates, Orlando Health is providing easy access to its high-performing healthcare by opening freestanding emergency rooms across the region. Each freestanding ER is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine doctors and nurses who can care for any member of your family, whether adult or child.
With five freestanding ERs already open, Orlando Health is putting emergency care closer to where you live, work and play.
What Is a Freestanding ER?
A freestanding ER is simply an emergency facility that’s physically unattached to a hospital building. Freestanding ERs remove the need to travel long distances on congested roadways by placing services further into the community. Just like Orlando Health’s hospital-based ERs, freestanding ERs provide 24/7/365 access to:
- The same level of care and services as our traditional hospital-based emergency rooms
- Board-certified emergency medicine doctors and nurses
- Nurses certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support, as well as advanced training in trauma Treatment for illnesses and injuries, including heart attack and stroke
- Diagnostic imaging including CT scan, MRI, ultrasound and X-ray
- Full-service laboratory
How Is a Freestanding ER Different from an Urgent Care Center?
Unlike an urgent care center, a freestanding ER must meet certain state requirements, including:
- Being open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
- Having emergency medicine physicians onsite at all times
- Providing imaging, lab services, and more specialized equipment and medications
