Inpatient Medicine

If you find yourself under the care of a physician at Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital, it’s very likely a doctor known as a “hospitalist” is caring for you as part of the Orlando Health Inpatient Medicine Group. A hospitalist is a physician specializing in the care of hospitalized patients who provides full-time inpatient medical care. Orlando Health hospitalists are well trained in the unique needs of the hospitalized patient.

Our skilled hospitalist team of board-certified internal and family medicine physicians is dedicated to providing each patient with quality care, a safe environment and a positive hospital experience.

What is the role of a hospitalist during my stay?

Hospitalists assume the role of your primary care provider while you are in the hospital. It is a hospitalist’s job to help you recover as quickly as possible. They do this by designing an individualized treatment plan for each patient and working with nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide this personalized attention.

Does the hospitalist work with my primary care physician?

Yes. From admission to discharge, our hospitalists work closely with primary care providers, therapists, surgeons, nurses and other hospital departments to facilitate the most effective treatment options. When you leave the hospital, your primary care physician will resume responsibility for your medical care.

What are the benefits of being cared for by a hospitalist?

Hospital-based physicians specialize in managing conditions that require hospitalization. They are devoted to the care of hospitalized patients 24 hours a day. Your hospitalist will understand your medical needs and be available to provide and oversee the care you need throughout your hospital stay.

What if I or my family have questions?

Hospitalists are available to answer questions in person whenever possible. Because they are on-site in the hospital, they are more familiar with your care and more readily accessible to you and your family.

What will happen after I’m discharged?

Prior to discharge, hospital staff will attempt to make an appointment for you with your primary care physician or specialist for follow-up care. If you do not currently have a primary care physician, click here to find one near you.
