Brain Injury Care (TBI)

With more than 35 years of experience in providing brain injury care, we offer unparalleled expertise and compassion in caring for patients with mild to severe brain injuries, from 12 years old and older. We have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for more than 30 years, offering our expertise and support from the time a patient steps into our facility and throughout a lifetime. Our expertise and commitment  are a win for patients, with more of our patients ultimately discharged to the community than is seen nationwide.

Our highly skilled team has earned specialty certifications in brain injury care and includes board-certified brain injury specialists, rehabilitation registered nurses, neurologic physician and specialists in neurologic physical therapy, along with recreational therapists, neuropsychologists, dietitians, case managers and social workers.  We are also the only hospital within Central Florida to offer a unique Disorder of Consciousness program (DOC).

Beyond our credentials is our commitment. We treat the entire patient, including their loved ones as an integral part of the process. In partnership with a level 1 trauma center, we provide a complete continuum of care, combining our expertise with the use of specialty assistive equipment, including exoskeleton walking assistance robotic device and innovative therapies, as needed.

We understand that every patient is different and strive to individualize our care, providing the appropriate stimulation or quiet options to optimize each experience.  We also provide opportunities for patients to participate in group sessions that include outings to local restaurants, music therapy, mindfulness and seated yoga classes, and cooking classes.
Our support extends well beyond the inpatient program, throughout reintegration into the community. Team members engage in our Neuro special interest group to build a bridge from one setting to the next, from acute care through outpatient. We are also active with the Central Florida TBI support group and host an annual reunion for former patients and family, maintaining relationships long beyond patient discharge.

Expanding Opportunities

We continue to innovate, adding evidence-based practices into our daily treatment sessions to offer the best possible care. We are also active in research projects and conferences to advance expertise in the treatment of brain injury. As an advocate for our patients and families, we have been awarded grant funding for programming that expands inclusion in public settings (like restaurants and public venues) for individuals with neurological impairments and we work to educate others. We also provide special medical alert booklets to help individuals in their re-entry to public interactions.

To increase education and awareness, we actively participate in community events that provide TBI awareness and prevention, working closely with a variety of partners, including the Center for Independent Living, local YMCA and others. In fact, our message of education and inclusion is now included as mandatory education for first responders across Orange, Seminole and Lake counties in Florida.
