Art Meets Medicine – 11 years of collaboration with CityArts and Arts in Medicine

Each spring, the Arts in Medicine program hosts the Art Meets Medicine showcase at CityArts Factory, 39 S. Magnolia Ave., Orlando, Florida — a beautiful showcase to benefit the sustainability of the Arts in Medicine program at Orlando Health Cancer Institute.

A cancer diagnosis and treatment process are often accompanied by a tremendous amount of stress. To combat this, Orlando Health Cancer Institute offers various Integrative Medicine programs that provide healing services to complement patients’ medical treatments – focused on their physical, emotional and social health.

A division of the Integrative Medicine department, the Arts in Medicine program provides materials, time and the expertise of an artist-in-residence, plus volunteers and art interns. Thanks to the generous donations, this program is offered at no cost to patients and caregivers.  Each spring, the program hosts the Art Meets Medicine Showcase – a showcase to benefit the Arts in Medicine program at the cancer institute.

Details about the event:

The showcase, held from May 16 through June 15, features over 100 art pieces created by cancer patients and their caregivers, exploring creative ways to bring hope to healing.

This year, we named the show, “Sewn Together.” The art was created by Orlando Health Cancer Institute patients and caregivers during chemotherapy, in waiting rooms, at the bedside and in workshop settings. Our theme this year represents a beautiful metaphor of how this community of artists are a tightly woven support system for those who are on a journey of healing from cancer. This year, a few dynamic projects stand out. The "Pastel Portrait" project is an intimate, artistic representation of multiple participants and their writings sponsored by a grant from United Arts of Central Florida. The exhibition also highlights two projects that are sponsored by Orlando Health: The "No One Should Face Cancer Alone" community quilt and "You Are the Art" clothing made by and for patients and their caretakers. Each person, with the help of an artist-in-residence, created a 2D art piece that was transformed into clothing to remind them that they are the art.
