Breast Milk Donation

We offer safe and controlled  drop-off locations where women can donate their extra breast milk.

Breast Milk Donation Through the Milk Depot

Women with extra breast milk can donate milk to help nourish premature and at-risk babies. Orlando Health Women’s Institute offers three Milk Depot locations that serve as drop-off sites for Human Milk Banking Association of North America milk banks.

We’re proud of our community’s generosity and the many women who have donated to the Milk Depot. These donations literally save lives.

The Benefits of Donating Breast Milk

Donated breast milk is sent to babies across the country. Generally, these babies are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where they depend on this nourishment to thrive when their mother’s milk is not available, they cannot tolerate formula, have a weakened immune system or have special dietary needs.

Your generous donation can do wonders for these special babies. Donated milk greatly reduces the incidence of digestive tract infections and many other infections. A little breast milk can make a big difference as one ounce of donated milk can feed a tiny preemie for an entire day, giving him or her a fighting chance at surviving and improved health.

Who Can Donate

Please consider donating your extra milk. You’re likely to qualify as a donor if:

  • You’re in generally good health
  • You don’t smoke
  • You’re not taking medications on a regular basis
  • Your milk has been frozen no longer than eight months and stored in a freezer that is cold enough to keep ice cream frozen.

About Mother’s Milk of Florida

Donated breast milk is collected by Mother’s Milk Bank of Florida, a Human Milk Banking Association of North American (HMBANA) milk bank. A HMBANA milk bank screens and tests potential donors, pasteurizes and cultures donated milk, then bottles the milk for shipment. This process is incredibly important as only milk from a HMBANA milk bank can safely be given to premature and sick infants receiving hospital care.
