Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is a specialized noninvasive method used to treat wounds and infections by improving the body’s immune system and promoting the healing response.
During HBO therapy, you will be inside a special pressurized chamber that delivers 100 percent oxygen. The spacious, clear acrylic, tubular chamber creates a comfortable healing environment. While breathing pure oxygen, your blood plasma becomes saturated, carrying 20 to 30 times the normal amount of oxygen to your body’s tissues. This results in the body’s natural wound-healing mechanisms (which are oxygen dependent) being able to function more efficiently, allowing your tissue to be restored from the inside out. Continued use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the body’s immune and healing response. HBO therapy also is effective in fighting certain types of infections, stimulating the growth of new blood vessels and improving circulation.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a safe and effective method used to treat wounds that may not respond well to other therapies alone. Our certified HBO technicians will guide you through this treatment to obtain the best results for an optimum healing opportunity.
Conditions that may benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:
- Actinomycosis
- Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Compromised grafts and flaps
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Crush injuries
- Diabetic wounds of the lower extremity
- Gangrene
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Osteomyelitis
- Post-radiation tissue injury
- Pressure ulcers
- Wounds caused by poor circulation or trauma
- Wounds that have not healed in several weeks
