Orlando Health’s Complex Hernia Center streamlines and expedites patient care for all types of hernia repair, from simple to the most complicated. The center depends on a multicentric approach that coordinates treatment through a central hub within the regional healthcare system, creating a unique collaborative model of formalized processes.

Rather than forcing all patients to drive to the same hospital, the center connects patients with surgeons who can provide comprehensive, personalized treatment at any of Orlando Health’s six Central Florida locations. This model makes it easier for patients to receive appropriate care as close to home as possible.

Volume growth attests to the success of navigating patients to a highly skilled surgeon at a convenient facility. In the first two quarters since the center opened in December 2022, volume for complex hernia treatment increased by 20 percent.
“This model allows us to leverage our strengths and use the facilities and talent we already have in place to provide patients access to topnotch care locally,” says Bobby Gibbons, MD, director of the Orlando Health Complex Hernia Center. “Now, our surgeons don’t have to leave their hospitals and can work in tandem with colleagues in specialties like bariatric, colorectal, interventional radiology and physical therapy to offer the multidisciplinary care that is often needed.”

Each site has surgeons who specialize in complex hernia surgery and abdominal wall reconstruction, and have advanced experience in treating the most complex cases, including multiple, large and recurring hernias. Many have participated in numerous studies and international conferences on the management of complex abdominal reconstruction.

“While hernia repair is one of the most common surgical concerns addressed worldwide, complex hernias are a different beast,” says Dr. Gibbons, who specializes in minimally invasive and robotic general surgery. “Big, complex hernias are very complicated. At Orlando Health, we have a group of surgeons who really enjoy doing this type of work. Not all surgeons do.”
Orlando Health’s team of multidisciplinary hernia specialists treat all types of hernias and abdominal wall reconstructions using the most advanced minimally invasive and robotic techniques.
