Dr. Virgilio Matheus is a board-certified neurosurgeon at Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute with extensive training in complex spine issues. He has expertise in treating:

  • Brain, spine and peripheral nerves
  • Herniated disks
  • Tumors of the spine
  • Spinal diseases and deformities
  • Spine fractures and trauma
  • Scoliosis
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Cerebrovascular diseases

Dr. Matheus and his patients discuss expectations and treatment options. His greatest satisfaction is in seeing his patients resume activities they once enjoyed.

Dr. Matheus’s Training

He received his medical training from the J.M. Vargas School of Medicine at Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. Dr. Matheus completed his residency in neurological surgery and his fellowship in complex spine surgery at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He was named Resident of the Year and also received the Synthes Award from the Congress of Neurological Surgeons for resident research on spinal cord and spinal column injuries.

About Dr. Matheus

Before joining Orlando Health, Dr. Matheus was the medical director of neurosurgery at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton, North Carolina, where he was awarded the physician spotlight award for excellence of care. He also served as an assistant professor at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lillington, North Carolina.

Dr. Matheus has completed a number of research studies, been published in peer-reviewed journals and authored chapters on several books related to spine surgery.

He is a fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Outside of work, Dr. Matheus enjoys swimming and scuba diving. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
