Aortic valve disease can be caused by stenosis (narrowing of the valve) or a leaky valve (regurgitation). You are at a higher risk of aortic valve disease if you are over 65 years of age or have a bacterial infection of the valve, inflammatory diseases, lupus, hypertension, rheumatic fever or rheumatoid arthritis.
