Awards & Accreditations
American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer Accreditation
The American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) provides the accreditation for our cancer program with a survey and on-site visit once every three years. We had a successful survey in September 2019 and were awarded full reaccreditation in January 2020. We also have a pending status as an Integrated Network Cancer Program with UF Health Cancer Center Gainesville.
As part of our accreditation, we annually engage in multiple quality studies and quality improvements throughout the cancer center and in all aspects of cancer care.
Breast Care Center Accreditation
Since 2013, our Breast Care Center has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Care Centers (NAPBC), which is administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). The accreditation requires demonstrated compliance with breast-cancer-specific quality, outcomes, clinical standards and quality improvement projects.
We had our three-year survey in September 2019 and received full reaccreditation following some suggested improvements to our documentation processes.
The NAPBC accreditation recognizes:
- Multidisciplinary team approaches to cancer care
- Access to education and support for patients
- Breast center data collection for quality measures
- Ongoing monitoring of care
- Access to clinical trials and new treatment options
In addition, the Breast Care Center at Orlando Health Cancer Institute received the Women’s Choice Award for America’s Best Breast Center in March 2015. This award acknowledges our Breast Care Center’s dedication to providing exceptional patient care and treatment.
Centers that earn the Women’s Choice Award must meet rigorous standards and measures of excellence from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) as well as the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Radiologists, Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE). Together, more than 28 criteria (including patient satisfaction feedback) are required to earn accreditation by both organizations. Fewer than 350 centers met the WCA standards in 2015, resulting in an elite group of centers devoted to women's breast health.
Radiation Oncology Accreditation
Our Radiation Oncology Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation for Radiation Oncology. We were due for a reaccreditation survey in July 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. We will submit our paperwork electronically and receive a virtual reaccreditation later in 2020.
The ACR-ASTRO seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific practice guidelines and technical standards developed by ACR and ASTRO after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are part of the assessment.
Medical Oncology Certification
Our Medical Oncology Clinics are certified by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, which is an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
The Orlando Health Cancer Institute has been participating in ASCO’s QOPI (Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) since 2012, with over 150 charts analyzed individually for nearly 150 discrete quality metrics with benchmarks against peer national cancer centers. We have developed our overall quality by using areas of improvement and transforming our clinic processes.
We first received QOPI Certification in March 2013. The QOPI Certification Program recognizes medical oncology and hematology/oncology practices that are committed to delivering the highest quality of cancer care. The Certification Program evaluates an individual practice’s performance in areas that affect patient care and safety and provides a three-year certification. This Certification Process requires a commitment to a comprehensive cancer-centric quality metric monitoring, analysis and reporting program with external site-visit validation and certification. We achieved recertification in 2016 and again in 2019.
Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence
As a designated Screening Center of Excellence (SCOE), the Orlando Health Cancer Institute is recognized for being committed to responsible, high-quality screening practices. The SCOE designation ensures safe and efficient low-dose CT screening for lung cancer.
Becker's Hospital Review
Becker’s Hospital Review named the Orlando Health Cancer Institute in its 2018 list of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs.” Becker’s highly praised the cancer center’s clinical trials, the status as one of the nation’s 24 proton centers and its distinction as the only Central Florida facility recognized by the state with a Florida Cancer Center of Excellence Award.
National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC)
Orlando Health Cancer Institute earned a three-year accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, in 2022.
The NAPRC is part of a collaboration between The OSTRiCh Consortium (Optimizing the Surgical Treatment of Rectal Cancer) and the Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. Only 15 centers have received the accreditation nationally.
The accreditation recognizes centers that provide care using a multidisciplinary approach. The NAPRC evaluates program structure, patient care processes, performance improvement and performance measures.
