About the Driving Program

Orlando Health’s Driving Program provides comprehensive assessment for those who may have a condition associated with medically at-risk drivers. These include but are not limited to:

  • Advanced age
  • Amputations
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Neurological impairments
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Orthopedic conditions
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury

The program includes a clinical evaluation by an Orlando Health occupational therapist to assess factors that influence safe driving. The therapist will assess skills — to include strength, range of motion, cognition, vision, reaction time and sensation — using a driving simulator as well as perform a comprehensive review of driving and medical history. Following the clinical evaluation, the therapist may recommend a “behind-the-wheel” evaluation, if appropriate, provided at alternate locations.*

Requirements for a Comprehensive Driving Evaluation

  • Must have driven prior to disability
  • Referral from a medical doctor
  • Valid driver’s license

*Additional information may be requested prior to behind-the-wheel evaluation.
