As regional leaders in minimally invasive spinal surgeries, neurosurgeons at Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute use next-level technology and surgical techniques to improve outcomes in complex spinal fractures.

“Our team has the multidisciplinary resources, superb technology and ability to use robotic navigation with precision, accuracy and reproducibility to address complex spinal pathologies with a minimally invasive approach,” says Terence Verla, MD, a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon at Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute.

With the area’s only Level One Trauma Center, Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC) is a high-volume environment for polytrauma. “Our spinal surgeons see an average of five or more complex fractures per week,” says Dr. Verla. “Some are managed non-operatively, but most require interventional procedures with multidisciplinary collaboration.”

“We exert a variable array of treatment options for spinal compression fractures from kyphoplasty to vertebral body augmentation with height restoration and deformity correction, all through minimally invasive approaches,” says Dr. Verla, who has presented nationally on spinal neurosurgery and been published in peer-reviewed journals.

Stealth technology, robotic neuro-navigation and the intraoperative exoscope enable surgeons to address complex three-column spinal fractures with the innovative single-position surgical technique in order to maintain spinal alignment, minimize positioning-related complications and optimize neurologic outcomes.

“We strive to accomplish complexity with very simplistic pathways,” says Dr. Verla.

The team at Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute performs more than 2,000 neurosurgeries annually and participates in multiple clinical trials. The institute is a spine care center of excellence and offers the region’s only Joint Commission-certified spine surgery program.
