Cardiac Rehab
Cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) can help strengthen your heart and get you back to the activities you love. Our experts work with you to manage your existing heart or vascular condition to help guide your recovery after a heart or vascular procedure. If you’ve had a heart attack, heart surgery or even heart failure, let us support your journey back to health.
Our three-part rehab program can improve how well your heart works and increase your overall endurance.
Phase One – Inpatient
Cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) can help strengthen your heart and get you back to the activities you love. Phase one of our cardiac rehabilitation program begins in the hospital following a heart event or procedure.
Before your heart procedure, you will be given detailed instructions on what to expect and the recovery process. You will also learn how to reduce your risk of future heart issues.
During your hospital stay, a cardiac rehab specialist will do low-level activities with you to help gradually regain your normal level of activity. We will provide you and your loved ones with information about risk factor modifications, exercise and cardiovascular function. We will encourage you to continue with our phase two – Outpatient program after you leave the hospital, which includes a low-level, progressive exercise program.
Phase Two – Outpatient
Cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) can help strengthen your heart and get you back to the activities you love following a heart procedure or heart event. At Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute, we offer a three-part cardiac rehab program to get you on the road to recovery quickly and safely.
Phase one of our cardiac rehabilitation program begins in the hospital following your procedure or heart event. After you leave the hospital, you may start the second phase of cardiac rehabilitation: Phase two – Outpatient. Outpatient cardiac rehab is available to patients who are managing certain heart or vascular conditions and need to improve their heart health.
Our outpatient cardiac rehab and education program includes exercise two or three times a week for one hour. Our team will teach you how to safely and properly exercise. We will monitor your heart rate and rhythm while you exercise to confirm your progress.
The goals in phase two of cardiac rehab include:
• Improve strength and flexibility with exercise
• Learn to manage risk factors such as weight gain, smoking, stress, high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes through lifestyle modifications
• Increase self-confidence
Once you have completed phase two of cardiac rehab, you may move to our phase three – Maintenance program.
Medicare and most commercial insurances cover most of the cost of the phase two program as a part of recovery and preventative care.
Phase Three – Maintenance
Cardiac rehabilitation (cardiac rehab) can help strengthen your heart and get you back to the activities you love. After phase one – Inpatient ¬and phase two – Outpatient care, our cardiac rehab program offers a phase three – Maintenance program to help you meet your personal goals for recovery.
During phase three – Maintenance, you will slowly increase your physical activity. Phase three is not monitored by our team and can even be done at home or at one of our outpatient locations. If you choose one of our outpatient facilities to continue cardiac rehab, our staff will be available for guidance and support. In addition, education about positive lifestyle changes continues during your visits.
Your insurance does not cover phase three of cardiac rehab.
Most major insurances cover phase one and phase two of cardiac rehab. Phase three is not covered under insurance and is offered as a self-pay program.
