What is Prostate Cancer?
An estimated 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. It is a slow-growing disease, and early detection is key to successful treatment. Orlando Health Cancer Institute offers diagnostic tools that go well beyond conventional PSA tests and digital rectal exams. They include:
UroNav is an update to traditional biopsies often recommended after an abnormality is detected in conventional screening. This technology merges magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with ultrasound imaging to help urologists pinpoint the location of a suspected tumor. This results in better rates of cancer detection with fewer tissue samples leading to lower risk of infection and a faster recovery time.
One of the difficulties encountered with advanced prostate cancer cases is locating lesions that have spread beyond the prostate. Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a protein specific to prostate cancer cells that can be targeted with a radioactive tracer compound for PET imaging. This approach is designed to pinpoint lesions that may have metastasized throughout the body but are not easily detected by conventional scans. Oncologists at Orlando Health Cancer Institute recommend PSMA PET imaging for men initially diagnosed with high-grade prostate cancer and those who experience a recurrence of the disease after previous treatment with radiation or surgery.
This state-of-the-art imaging technology allows our oncologists to more comprehensively visualize the prostate when evaluating for details that may not be available by conventional scans. This powerful tool often provides additional information regarding the extent of disease within the prostate to help our oncologists better plan for diagnostic biopsies or facilitate treatment planning with surgery or radiation.
