7 Reasons To Consider Liposuction

October 13, 2025

If you’re considering liposuction, you’re not alone. It is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. and around the world. And there are many reasons that people consider having it done.

Liposuction is often performed under general anesthesia, with your surgeon using a suction device that removes fat from targeted areas. The technique can be used to remove fat from many parts of the body, including:

  • Abdomen or waist
  • Hips or “love handles”
  • Face or neck
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Upper arms

Let’s look at some of the more common motivations for the procedure.

  1. Tone stubborn spots: For some people, seemingly no amount of exercise or dieting can reach every fat pocket on the body. For these stubborn spots, liposuction can be a great answer. Among the most common examples of this include the area around the lower rib cage and those love handles around the waist. After you identify the areas you want to focus on, your surgeon can sculpt the fat away.
  2. Boosting confidence: Getting rid of fat pockets can be a significant boost to your self-confidence by improving your self-image. However, liposuction and other forms of plastic surgery are not treatments for psychological disorders. Have an open conversation with your plastic surgeon to make sure you are having the procedure for the right reasons.
  3. Balanced body: Body sculpting with liposuction can help with undesired asymmetry – it’s not uncommon to have the proportions on one side of your body not match exactly with the other side. You may also feel like your upper and lower body are out of proportion with each other. A pear-shaped body, for example, may have excess fat on the hips, thighs and buttocks. Liposuction can remove that excess and make your lower body fit better with your upper body.
  4. Post-pregnancy changes: Obviously, you will gain weight during a pregnancy. But afterward, you may find it difficult to return to your pre-pregnancy form. This could be because of hormonal changes that alter the way your body accumulates fat. If you aren’t happy with your progress six months or more after delivery, liposuction can help deal with those changes.
  5. Permanent removal of fat cells: One of the benefits of liposuction is that it permanently removes the fat cells from the treatment area. There shouldn’t be a reason to have a follow-up procedure. However, it’s important to understand that this doesn’t change the fact that your body will still need to store fat somewhere. Let’s say you tend to accumulate fat in your love handles. That shouldn’t occur again after liposuction. But your body will find somewhere else to store fat if you don’t change your diet and lifestyle to maintain your new appearance.
  6. Your clothes will fit better: Have you ever disregarded a particular type of clothing because you don’t think it matches your body? Liposuction can reshape your body to give you more confidence in choosing what you want to wear.
  7. Fat borrowing: There may be times when you want to take fat from one part of your body and use it somewhere else. That comes into play with one of the more common plastic surgery procedures – the Brazilian butt lift – where fat can be used to boost and reshape the buttocks. Fat can also be used for contouring other parts of the body, including the face.

A Final Thought on Liposuction

If you are considering liposuction, you should go into it understanding that this isn’t a one-stop, quick fix for your concerns about fat.

Liposuction can be a shortcut to noticeable changes to your physical appearance. But these are gains that will require work to maintain. Before having a procedure, be sure to talk with a specialized doctor – ideally board certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery – about your options and what you can expect after the procedure.
