2009 Event Recap

The 11th Annual Miracle Miles Presented by Chick-fil-A® was a great success! On September 26, 2009 over 2,600 people participated in a 15k and 5k in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies.

Over 200 participants joined us for the new feature, “Walk-Around-Winnie”, a symbolic stroll around Winnie Palmer Hospital allowing participants to visibly show their support for the tiny babies and their families inside.

As Presenting Sponsor, Chick-fil-A® provided significant support for Miracle Miles both financially and through fundraising efforts. Winnie Palmer Hospital donation cards were sold at all 30 Chick-fil-A® locations in Central Florida and the cards generated approximately $10,000 for the NICU.

During the Awards Ceremony, presented by IKON Office Solutions, prizes were awarded to the following runners:

  • Dan McCarthy and Ingrid Darling won Overall Male and Female 15k Masters and took home two SeaWorld and Aquatica combo tickets each.

  • Paul Nielsen and Briana Whaley won Top Overall Male & Female 15k and each received free Chick-fil-A® for a year, a Tag Heuer watch from Tharoo & Co., and two Discovery Cove tickets which included a dolphin swim.

  • Richard Benson and Sonja Friend-Uhl were also awarded two Discovery Cove tickets as Top Overall Male and Female 5k finishers.

  • Rob Shollar and Michelle Nunez received two SeaWorld and Aquatica combo tickets as Male and Female Second Place Overall 5k finishers.

  • Thomas Wiese and Carolyn Lyon received two SeaWorld and Aquatica combo tickets as Male and Female Third Place Overall in the 5k.

Thank you to SeaWorld and Tharoo & Co. for donating this year’s winner’s prizes.

Runners and spectators enjoyed an array of food samples including; Chick-fil-A® chicken sandwiches, orange chicken from Panda Express, granola bars and trail mix from Rainforest Café, and an assortment of fruit from Collins Catering.

Immediately following the race, runners and spectators enjoyed activities at this year’s Community Block Party celebrating the 20 Year Anniversary of Arnold Palmer Medical Center.  Landry’s Restaurants provided an assortment of food from six restaurant locations and live entertainment was provided by Nigels 11, Mark & James, and One Call.

On behalf of the NICU babies and their families, thank you to the many event sponsors, volunteers, staff and committee members for their continued support.   We wish to extend special thanks to Pediatrix Medical Group, Coca-Cola, The Vaughn Group, Fulcrum Partners and Abbott Nutrition for their generous donations to Miracle Miles, as well as our Media Partners for 2009, WKMG Local 6, Florida Doctor Magazine and Orlando Magazine. We look forward to seeing everyone on September 25, 2010 for the 12th Annual Miracle Miles.  Regardless of athletic ability, all levels of runners, walkers, spectators and families are encouraged to participate to celebrate in honor of our tiniest patients.
