Overview

A coronary calcium scan results in a score that indicates whether you're at risk for a heart attack or other heart problems before other signs and symptoms occur. Our cardiologists may be able to lower your risk by recommending diet and lifestyle changes. If your risk remains high, our doctors may discuss a treatment plan to improve your health and longevity.

Risk Factors

If you are age 40 or older, or have a significant family history of heart disease, ask your physician about a coronary calcium screening.

Other risk factors that may indicate need for a coronary calcium screening include:

  • High cholesterol levels
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Past or current tobacco use
  • Physical inactivity
  • Being overweight

You may not be a candidate for a coronary calcium screening if you:

  • Have coronary stents in place
  • Have had a heart attack
  • Are pregnant

Benefits of Coronary Calcium Screening

  • Screening accurately detects the presence of heart disease and helps predict the likelihood of future heart disease.
  • Early detection means treatment can begin sooner, before serious cardiac problems occur.
  • Test is quick and does not require any injections of dye or medications.
