Just the Facts - Cardiac Arrhythmia

Our entire body relies on a natural electrical system to create contractions in our heart, causing the blood to flow in and out of our heart and to the rest of the body. In more than four million Americans, that electrical current is flawed in some way, causing an irregular heart rhythm, or cardiac arrhythmia.

Screening

If you are experiencing symptoms or have one or more risk factors, get checked right away. A screening may involve one or more of the following diagnostic tests:

Reduce Your Risk

To reduce your risk of developing arrhythmia, monitor your risk factors. If you do not currently have any symptoms or risk factors, eating healthy, staying active, limiting alcohol and caffeine consumption, and avoiding nicotine and drugs are all good preventive measures.

If you have arrhythmia and notice that symptoms occur more often with certain activities, try to avoid them. Some people are sensitive to caffeine and may notice more symptoms when using caffeine products such as tea, coffee, soft drinks and some over-the-counter medications. Some cough and cold medications contain ingredients that promote irregular heart rhythms. Ask your doctor or pharmacist which medications are the safest.

The Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Center provides one of Florida’s most sophisticated and accurate diagnostic instruments.
