South Seminole Hospital
A stent is a small wire mesh tube used to open and support a narrowed artery, much like a scaffold. A thin tube, called a catheter, is guided into the artery. The stent stays in the artery permanently, holds it open, improves blood flow to the heart muscle and relieves symptoms (usually chest pain).
Stents are used depending on certain features of the artery blockage, including site of blockage and the size of the artery. This procedure is similar to peripheral angioplasty, which also uses a catheter to guide the physician to the narrowed artery. However, angioplasty uses a balloon to widen the artery, rather than a stent.
