COURSE GOALS: Critical Care Medicine (CCM) service specializes in the care of critically ill patients from a wide spectrum of medical, neurological, neurosurgical, cardiac, and cardiovascular etiologies. Conditions cared for in the Critical Care Medicine service include but are not limited to: acute hypoxia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, acid-base imbalances, liver and renal failure, acute stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, acute myocardial ischemia, septic shock, GI bleed, drug overdoses, status epilepticus, and coma. Medical student rotations in the CCM are one month in length. While in the the Multisystem Intensive Care Unit (MICU), students work closely with the Critical Care, Pulmonary/Critical Care Attendings and Fellows on the CCM Service.

Students have the opportunity to learn procedures under the direct supervision of the CCM Attending or Fellow. Central venous lines and arterial lines will be done in the presence of the attending or fellow until the resident has documented satisfactory competency in these procedures. Students may have the opportunity to participate in the placement of pulmonary artery (Swan-Ganz) catheters, endotracheal tubes, chest tube insertion; in all cases the MICU Attending or another Pulmonary/Critical Care Attending is present for the entire procedure.

The multidisciplinary team in the MICU also includes a pharmacist (PharmD), a respiratory supervisor, a social worker and a nutritionist. Call is every fourth night.

Night Call is one (1) week over the four week period.  

Grand Rounds are once a week.

COURSE GOALS: This course is designed to develop an understanding of the pathophysiology of gastrointestinal disease and to learn an approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with gastrointestinal disease. After completion of the course, the student should be able to take a detailed history and perform a physical examination tailored to the gastrointestinal system, in order to develop a differential diagnosis. Instruction includes bedside teaching, didactic lectures, conferences and Grand Rounds.

COURSE GOALS: This course provides an in-depth exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic disease and malignancy in the hospital and outpatient setting. After completion of the course, the student should be able to take a detailed history and perform a physical examination tailored to the hematologic system, in order to develop a differential diagnosis. Instruction is conducted at the state-of-the-art, comprehensive Orlando Health Cancer Institute and includes bedside teaching, didactic lectures, conferences and Grand Rounds.
