COURSE GOALS: The course is designed to expose the student to patient assessment and emergency management of a large number of patients entering a metropolitan Emergency Department and Trauma Center. Instruction is centered around bedside clinical supervision by faculty and residents in a busy Emergency Department. A comprehensive didactic schedule is provided and includes conferences prepared for residents and students as well as conferences designed exclusively for students.
COURSE MATERIALS: Didactic conference (6 hours/week), Peer 8, Medical Student Guide to EM and Medical Student Rotation Supplement (files containing reference articles on EM topics and a procedure check list)
METHODS OF EVALUATION: 80% clinical performance, 20% participation and attendance at lectures

COURSE GOALS: The course is designed to introduce the student to prehospital patient care concepts in a large regional EMS system. Instruction is centered around ride time in the field with various types of agencies including fire-based, private, and aeromedical. Students will work alongside system medical directors to assist in paramedic education, oversight, and other administrative duties. A comprehensive didactic schedule will be provided each month tailored toward medical students to include lecture and simulation based sessions.
COURSE MATERIALS: Field Observation/Ride Time (40 hours of ride time with Orange County System agencies, Orange County Communication Center (4 hours of observation at the dispatch center), Administrative Meetings (attendance at several monthly system wide meetings), Didactic conference (5 hour/week), Prehospital Patient Care Simulation (one 3 hour sim session), Evidence Based Protocol Review (one page word document of an Orange County Protocol with references and informal presentation to medical directors), Medical Student Guide to EMS and Medical Student Rotation Supplement (files containing reference articles on EMS topics)
METHODS OF EVALUATION: 50% field observation completion, 25% participation and attendance at lectures and simulation, 25% evidence based protocol review and presentation
