About Us
The Orlando Health Graduate Medical Education Diversity Council, along with the Graduate Medical Education team at Orlando Health, is committed to creating an inclusive environment for teaching and learning through sustainable initiatives for our more than 350 residents, fellows and medical students who choose to train at our Orlando Health hospitals in over 40 different programs. Areas of focus for the Orlando Health Graduate Medical Education Diversity Council include Community Building, Recruitment and Education and Research.
Mission Statement
To foster an inclusive environment that values, respects and recognizes the diversity of our community, physicians, team members, patients and families.
We are proud to embrace diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, culture, gender, gender identity, age, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and religion.
Goals
Recruitment
Support the recruitment of residents that are underrepresented in medicine (URM)*
Inclusivity
Promote a safe, diverse, and inclusive culture for the Orlando Health residency programs
Health Equity
Support the development and facilitation of health equity curricula and research opportunities focused on health disparities
Subject Matter Expertise
Provide recommendations to the Graduate Medical Education Committee related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Why is the Diversity Council needed?
Studies have shown that during a period already characterized by substantial stress, minority residents face extra workplace burdens.
Three major themes have been identified:
- Daily barrage of microaggressions and bias
- Minority residents tasked as race/ethnicity ambassadors
- Challenges negotiating professional and personal identity while seen as “other”
